NGT retains HUL from upscaling Mercury remediation in Kodaikanal

The National Green Tribunal(NGT) has restained FMCG major Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) from uplscaling mercury remediation process(CPCB) to obtain an expert opinion in the matter. A crew headed by the NGT chairperson was minformed that experts were needed in the field they are available in IIT Delhi and IIT Chennai in the chemical engineering department who can handle the mercury contamination and bio magnification. According to the view which is proceed further in the matter, it is considered has the direct the Central Pollution Control Board(CPCB). The experts will be at a liberty to visit here if it is considered important by the HUL. The green panel said the parties would also be at liberty to furnish relevant documents to CPCB. The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by Kodaikanal resident against the remediation levels that have been set at 20-25 mg per Kg on the ground that it was not scientifically tested. The issue was raised against the high court in Madras which allowed mody to approach the Ministry of Environment. According to the applicant the stand does not have any sound technical basis.
